Harutiun Vartanian
Harutiun (or Harry) Vartanian is a graduate of the school of Khoshmat and used to work in Nor Kiugh as a teacher. He also went to high school of Palu, studying linguistics there. During the days of despotism and oppression, he managed to get to the New World. At this moment he lives in Chicago. "The Abduction of Paro" is one of the best-known works written by him.
An Episode in Harutiun Vartanian’s Life:
In 1907 when Harutiun went to Getronagan High School to study linguistics, the grandson of Peni Effendi— "Pasha"—was also admitted. An exceptional student, he studied Armenian and French there.
Every time "Pasha" entered the classroom all the pupils would stand up as a sign of respect. Harutiun didn’t approve of this kind of behavior, so the next day when "Pasha" entered the classroom he didn’t stand up. Despite all the rebukes of the school inspector, Aram Effendi, Harutiun was adamant about his decision. When Harutiun had only six months left to finish, he was kicked out of the institution as a stubborn pupil.
Harutiun’s uncle, Mr. Manug Vartanian, who was known in the region as a smart and powerful man, took Harutiun’s hand and went to the palace of Pasha’s father, telling the whole truth to the bey. Mahmud bey was surprised to know about this incident and hurried to the town with the Vartanians. The moment Mahmud bey entered the school all the pupils along with the teaching staff stood up. Mahmud Bey told them that he wouldn’t take even one more step unless everyone sat down. Then he added, “From this moment on, none of the pupils should stand up in respect of Pasha.”
After expressing words of appreciation for Mahmud Bey, the headmaster told Harutiun to take his place and resume classes. Mahmud Bey returned to his house with a feeling of contentment.
This little story shows the brave and daring nature of the people of Khoshmat. It also introduces us to a great man, Mahmud Bey, highlighting the noble act done by him.
Learning the Armenian language thanks to Nishan Effendi Keosaian, Mahmud Bey could fluently write and read in Armenian and was in very good relationship with the Armenians. During the disastrous days of 1895 and 1915, he released approximately 500 Armenians from captivity; among them were many people originally from Khoshmat.
