Part II

Chapter 2 : United Association of Armenians in Palu

During 35 years of operation (from 1880 to 1915) the United Association of Armenians stopped working only in 1895 due to the mass killings. However, the organization resumed its activities later. The United Association of Armenians came to illuminate Palu and breathe fresh life into the educational field of the town.

Fortunately, we have the newsletter of the United Association of Armenians (1880-1913) published in Constantinople which provides us not only with the education statistics of Palu but also of all Armenian-populated provinces. It also gives us information on the school budget, teaching staff, students and Teachers’ Summer Seminaries.

According to the information provided by the head of the school, Mr. Bedros Arabian, the Teachers’ Summer Seminary was located half an hour away from the village of Havav, next to the wooded hillock, inside Kaghtsrahayats Monastery. Mr. Arabian, a widely respected teacher himself, worked under the direction of a renowned historian, Prof. Mikayel Minasian. The teaching staff consisted of 46 teachers, 39 of whom were male and 7 females.

Other exceptional lectures were also presented on different topics in the form of debates along with exciting speeches and pubic recitations.

In the end the Teachers’ Seminary was permanently closed. The closing ceremony was held under the chairmanship of Mr. Sarkis Mardirosian during which Mr. Sdepan Koboian, Mr. Karekin Paralian and Mr. Khachig Khachigian (a survivor who presently lives in America) made very touching and captivating speeches.

The ceremony ended with an impressive speech made by Prof. Hovhaness Bujikanian.

The people of Palu made every possible effort to provide their children with a good education with the help of teachers and priests. Students attended the high schools of Palu, Havav and Khoshmat operating under the patronage of the United Association of Armenians. After graduation some of them continued to study elsewhere: Euphrates College, Berberian School and Robert College, Europe or America.

It would be too challenging for us to describe the educational, cultural, architectural fields of each village along with the village’s history and population. Therefore, we will try to provide brief information only on one or two villages.
